FIRE means Financial Independence, Retire Early. The internet turned it into teams.
Translate the labels
- Lean: a thin yearly spend. Fragile to rent spikes and hospitals.
- Regular: a spend that looks like a normal middle life.
- Fat: a spend with slack. Needs a much larger garden.
- Coast: the pile is already such that *time* plus modest growth might finish the job; you work more lightly.
- Barista / part-time: some earnings continue on purpose.
These are spending and work choices. They are not moral ranks.
Reject the purity contest
You do not owe a forum a date, a lean score, or a screenshot. A 38-year-old who funds parents and a child is not “doing FIRE wrong.” They are doing India.
**Note:** Early retirement has tax, health-cover, and boredom problems that 25-year-old threads skip. If you like your work, independence can still be the goal without the “retire” half.
