Debt and cash in practice

Parking money is a skill. “Debt fund” is not a synonym for cannot-fall.

Cash ladder for known bills

Next month’s rent stays in the bank. Fees in eight months can sit in a boring, reachable place - a deposit ladder or a very short-duration / liquid-style fund whose job you understand. The word “fund” does not make it clever.

FDs

Fixed deposits are easy to understand: you lend to the bank for a term, you get a rate, breaking early can cost. Useful for named short goals. Not automatically the best long-term inflation tool.

Debt funds, two risks in two sentences

Interest-rate risk: when rates move, existing bonds change price. Longer duration usually moves more. Credit risk: someone in the basket may not pay. Extra yield is sometimes extra worry.

A liquid or overnight-style fund is built for parking. A credit-risk fund is not a savings account with manners.

Where it broke (pattern, not gore)

Households have learned, more than once, that a “safe-looking” debt fund can freeze or fall when credit bets go wrong. Read the factsheet’s credit quality and duration, not the category nickname.

**Note:** Names and SEBI categories change. Learn the two risks. Verify the current paper. Not a recommendation of any fund house.

Where it breaks

Parking the emergency fund in a credit-heavy or long-duration fund because the last year paid more than an FD. Assuming “debt” means the NAV cannot drop.

  • Match parking to the date you need the money.
  • Debt has rate risk and credit risk.
  • Extra yield is not a free lunch.
