Family money and joint lives

Most Indian money is not only yours. Make the hidden flows visible without starting a fight.

The hidden portfolio

Parents’ medical cover. A sibling’s education EMI you quietly pay. Gold that is “family” until it is needed. A joint account that is really one person’s salary. An insurance premium someone else assumes is paid.

If it can call you at 11 p.m., it belongs on the page.

One shared page

You do not need a family WhatsApp debate. You need one page:

  • Who pays which EMI
  • Who is covered by which health policy
  • What parents have in EPF / pension / FD
  • What you send home, and whether it is a goal or a leak
  • Nominees

Couples: a monthly twenty-minute review beats a yearly explosion. Students: money from home is income with a job, not a personality test.

Talking without a fight

Lead with numbers, not virtues. “The emergency bucket is at 40 days, not 90” is easier than “you overspend.” Agree on three goals as a household. Cap the rest.

**Note:** Joint lives include in-laws, informal loans, and cash. Pretending those are not finance is how plans fail politely.

Where it breaks

Secret SIPs. Surprise gold. A parent uninsured while the child buys a theme fund. Assuming “Papa handles it” with no nominee and no paper.

  • Hidden family flows still count.
  • One shared page lowers the volume.
  • Fences for dependents beat extra garden for ego.
