How to choose a fund without noise

A process beats a star rating. This is homework, not a buy list.

You are not picking a personality. You are hiring a basket for a job.

The process

  • Job. What room and what time? “Long equity core” is a job. “This one did 42%” is not.
  • Rule. Index (follows a list) or active (a team tries to beat a list after fees). Know which you hired.
  • Fee. Expense ratio. Direct vs regular. Two similar jobs with very different fees are not similar.
  • Behaviour over a cycle. Rolling returns and how the fund did through a bad stretch beat a one-year trophy.
  • Size and survival. A tiny new theme fund can vanish or change personality. Existence through a hard year is information.
  • Overlap. If it buys what you already own, you added paperwork.

Worked comparison (no winner)

Fund A and Fund B both say “large cap.” A charges less and hugs its index. B charges more and sometimes looks different. 201 does not crown B because last year was pretty. You ask: do I want a core that is cheap and wide, or am I paying extra for a difference I can describe?

If you cannot describe the difference, you are paying for a story.

**Note:** This chapter does not recommend a fund. Star ratings are backward-looking. Categories and rules change. Verify the current factsheet.

Where it breaks

Shopping on last quarter’s leaderboard. Owning six funds so you never have to decide. Switching every year to last year’s winner (a proven way to buy high).

  • Job → rule → fee → cycle → overlap.
  • One-year fireworks are not a process.
  • If you cannot say why this fund is different, you do not need it.

Key takeaways

  • Job → rule → fee → cycle → overlap.
  • One-year fireworks are not a process.
  • If you cannot say why this fund is different, you do not need it.
