Goals as named buckets
“I want to be rich” is not a goal. “₹2 lakh for a bike in 30 months” is.

A goal has three parts: a name, a number, and a date. Miss any one and it becomes a wish.
Time buckets
Money you need in different years should not sit in the same chair.
- Under 3 years: park it. This is Safe, not Grow. Markets can have a bad two years.
- 3 to 7 years: a mix, decided later. Do not skip 101 to pick it.
- 7 years and beyond: this is where investing usually earns its keep, because you can wait.
The bike in 30 months and retirement in 30 years are not the same problem wearing different clothes.
Naming changes behaviour
“Savings” is a fog. “Emergency,” “Semester fees 2027,” “First SIP” are rooms you can walk into.
Give each active goal its own label in the bank or in Finnass. When money moves, you should be able to say which room it entered.
When two goals fight
They will. A useful order for 101:
- Keep the lights on (Live).
- Start the emergency bucket.
- Fix hungry debt (next chapter after insurance).
- A tiny Grow habit so the muscle exists.
- Lifestyle goals (phone, trip, bike).
Example. You want an emergency fund, a new phone, and a first SIP. Emergency wins the extra rupee until one month of must-pay costs exists. The phone waits. The SIP can be ₹500 so the standing instruction exists - not so the phone can pretend to be an investment.
**Note:** Cap active goals at three. Fifteen goals is no goal. Park the rest on a someday list.
Where it breaks
A goal with no date becomes decoration. A goal with a date of “soon” is the same thing.
Putting a 14-month goal into an equity SIP because “returns are higher” is how people sell at the worst time.
- A goal has a name, a number, and a date.
- Short-term money does not go into the garden.
- Three active goals is plenty.
