Allocation: picking a split
Allocation is the percentage each room gets. Age rules are sketches. Sleep is data.

Allocation is the mix: how much of the garden is equity, how much is debt-like, how much stays cash for near bills.
Sketches people quote
“100 minus age in equity.” “110 minus age.” These are pencil marks from a different country and a different pension system. They are not laws. A 30-year-old with a house down payment in 18 months should not copy a 30-year-old with a funded bucket and no near goal.
Better questions:
- When is this money needed?
- What already sits in EPF / PPF / NPS?
- What drop would break the monthly loop?
Sleep test
Write a mix on paper. Imagine the equity line 30–40% lower for a year while you still SIP. If you would stop the SIP and sell the rest, the mix is too loud. Quiet it until the story is bearable.
Teaching picture, not a forecast
Imagine ₹10,000 a month for 15 years into three cartoon mixes - 70/30 equity-debt, 50/50, 30/70. In a kind history the louder mix ends higher. In a harsh first five years the quieter mix is easier to keep. The point is not the ending rupees. The point is: the mix you abandon is the worst mix.
**Note:** Made-up paths are not predictions. No sketch can promise a number. Educational, not advice.
Cash is part of the split
Cash for the next year of known bills is not “being too conservative.” It is how the garden does not get sold for fees.
Where it breaks
Copying a reel allocation that ignores EPF. Raising equity because last year was good (that is how people buy expensive). Lowering equity to zero after a fall (that is how people sell cheap).
- Time buckets + sleep beat a copied age formula.
- Count EPF and other boxes in the split.
- The mix you can keep is the mix that matters.
