Diversification without the poster

Diversification is different jobs, not twelve equity funds doing the same job.

The poster says “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” Fine. The quiet half is: don’t buy eighteen mango baskets from the same tree and call it farming.

What diversification is trying to do

Different rooms stumble at different times. Equity can have a ugly year while your cash bucket pays rent. Debt can look dull while equity runs. Gold can sit quiet for years and then move when people are scared.

You diversify so one story cannot end the plan. You do not diversify to make every line go up every month. That product does not exist.

Same-tree funds

A large-cap fund, a “flexi cap” that is mostly large-cap, a sector fund in banks, and an index that is heavy in the same names - four labels, one weather system.

A useful test: if one headline would make all of them fall together, they are not different jobs.

Too many baskets

Eighteen funds is not safety. It is a list you will not review. Over-diversifying into every theme of the year creates a pile that behaves like a messy index with higher fees.

A household core can be a handful of lines: cash bucket, long debt box (EPF/PPF or a debt fund), broad equity, maybe one more deliberate satellite later.

**Note:** Diversification is not a reason to add a product this week. It is a reason to ask “what job is empty?” before you add.

Where it breaks

Owning both a Nifty-like index and five active funds that hug the same index. Diversifying into things you cannot explain (a cousin’s PMS, a guaranteed-sounding hybrid).
