What a portfolio is
A portfolio is everything you own that has a money job - counted on one page.

A portfolio is not “my three mutual funds.” It is the whole picture: bank cash, emergency bucket, EPF, PPF, NPS, SIPs, that old insurance-cum-investment, gold in the locker, the employee stock that might vest, the loan you still owe (as a minus).
If you do not count it, it still counts. It still moves your life.
One page
Write rows:
- Name of the account or thing
- Room (cash / debt / equity / gold / real estate / other)
- Job (emergency, fees 2027, long grow, house we live in)
- Today’s number (rough is fine)
Add a line for hungry debt as a negative. Net worth is assets minus debts. You do not need to worship the number. You need to see it.
Four “investments,” one bet
Ravi lists four funds. All four buy large Indian companies. He feels diversified because the logos differ. On the one-page view he has one bet with extra paperwork.
Counting is how that joke becomes visible.
EPF is in the room
Households forget the salary pipe. A ₹6 lakh EPF plus a ₹1 lakh equity SIP is not “I only have ₹1 lakh invested.” The mix is already more debt-like than the SIP screenshot suggests.
**Note:** Update the page when something big changes, not every evening. The page is a map, not a scoreboard.
Where it breaks
A portfolio that lives in five apps and no list. Calling the house you live in “my aggressive allocation.” Shelter is a job.
