Inflation: the silent leak
Prices rise. A fixed pile of rupees buys less. That is why cash under the mattress feels safe and still loses.

Inflation is a quiet leak on money that just sits.
The notebook test
A notebook that cost ₹20 when you were small may cost ₹40 later. Same paper. Different rupees. Groceries, fees, rent, and hospital rooms do a larger version of the same trick.
If your pile of cash does not grow, it buys a smaller life over time. That is the whole lecture.
Safe and still leaking
A savings account and cash at home feel safe because the number does not fall. The *number* is not the point. What the number can buy is the point.
Parking next month’s rent in cash is still correct. That money’s job is to exist on the first. Parking twenty years of future life only in cash is how people work forever and wonder why.
Do not worship last year’s FD rate
Fixed deposits and similar parking spots pay a rate that moves when the world moves. Using this year’s rate as “my forever return” is how plans lie. Using last year’s equity fund return as “my forever return” is the same lie in a louder jacket.
**Note:** Inflation is not a reason to put emergency money into the wildest equity fund you can find. It is a reason to give long-term money a long-term job, after the bucket and the fence exist.
Where it breaks
“Inflation is 6% so I need 20%.” That sentence usually ends in a product pitch. Ignoring inflation completely and assuming ₹50,000 will feel the same in 2046.
- Inflation is a leak on idle money.
- Investing is one way households try to outrun it - with no promise in any single year.
- Short-term money can stay boring. Long-term money needs a better job than the mattress.
