Risk, time, and sleep
Risk is not a vibe. It is “this number can drop, and I might need the money before it recovers.”

Risk, in this school, is a calendar problem.
Horizon
Horizon is how long the money can stay without you. Need it in 10 months? Short horizon. Need it in 20 years? Long horizon.
A chart that falls 40% in year two of a 25-year SIP is a bad page in a long book - *if you keep the standing instruction and do not need the money now.* A chart that falls 40% the year before fees are due is a plan failure. Same drop. Different calendar.
Volatility is not the same as being ruined
Prices bounce. That bounce is called volatility. It feels like ruin if you watch every day. It is not automatically ruin if the basket still represents real businesses and you have time.
Permanent loss is different: you sold at the bottom because you needed the cash, or the thing you owned was a story that ended.
101 does not ask you to enjoy the bounce. It asks you not to put next year’s rent into it.
Capacity vs sleep
Capacity is math: other income, emergency bucket, dependents, loans. Willingness is sleep: some people cannot watch a 20% drop without breaking the plan.
If the mix would make you sell everything, the mix is too loud - even if a spreadsheet says you are “young so you should be aggressive.”
A 19-year-old with no dependents and a 59-year-old paying a child’s fees should not copy each other’s split. Age is a clue. It is not a commandment.
**Note:** There is no gold-star allocation. There is a mix you can keep through a boring year and a scary year.
Where it breaks
Checking NAV daily and calling that “research.” Copying a cousin’s portfolio who has a government pension you do not have. Assuming “I am young” means you cannot lose money you will need in two years.
- Time changes what risk means.
- If a chart would make you sell everything, the mix is too loud.
- Capacity and sleep are both real. Honour both.
